A mold cavity is rarely manufactured to exactly the same dimensions as the final plastic component. Instead, mold designers enlarge cavity dimensions according to the expected material shrinkage.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"411\" data-end=\"706\">However, shrinkage is not simply a fixed percentage taken from a material datasheet. It is influenced by polymer type, fiber reinforcement, wall thickness, gate position, flow direction, packing pressure, mold temperature, part geometry, and even the time at which the finished part is measured.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"907\">For mold manufacturers and product engineers, the real challenge is therefore not <strong data-start=\"790\" data-end=\"823\">\u201cWhat is the shrinkage rate?\u201d<\/strong> but <strong data-start=\"828\" data-end=\"907\">\u201cHow should shrinkage be predicted, distributed, validated, and corrected?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"1082\">This article focuses on the engineering application of shrinkage during mold development rather than repeating general material-selection or injection-molding design topics.<\/p><hr data-start=\"1084\" data-end=\"1087\" \/><h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"zal5se\" data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1131\">1. What Is Injection Molding Shrinkage?<\/h2><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1133\" data-end=\"1257\">Injection molding shrinkage is the dimensional reduction that occurs when molten plastic cools and solidifies after molding.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1518\">During injection, polymer enters the cavity at elevated temperature. As the material cools, its specific volume decreases.
